As mentioned earlier, container applications are software modules with a precisely defined functionality that allow new deployment options delivering numerous benefits for automation technology. Benefits are the low-resource, universal application running on different computer platforms or the practical isolation, encapsulation and portability of software. What makes this approach so special is that containers operate like a kind of virtual machine that contains all the required components. This means that they can run independently of any external components and the existing environment. If several container applications are used on one hardware platform, they share the operating system and, if necessary, certain hardware resources, while being completely separate from each other and from the system as such. This ensures that a container application always behaves identically, regardless of the environment in which it is executed.

Once downloaded, container applications can be deployed within seconds using a single command line and at production level offer the advantage of enabling easy central administration. This can be done either on-premise using a device management system (DMS) or in a cloud setting (e.g Microsoft Azure IoT Edge, AWS IoT Greengrass), and as machine workloads change, the workload can be distributed across multiple container applications.

In contrast to other IoT chip devices, the CTR-100 from SYS TEC electronic combines Sensor2Cloud requirements with data pre-processing from time-critical signals to efficient control tasks. For this purpose, corresponding function libraries are already pre-installed, with which the CTR-100 is immediately ready for use. Furthermore, our CTR-100 is well prepared for the use of cloud services such as the IBM IoT platform (IBM Watson).

sysWORXX IoT Gateway: Field-level solution for Industry 4.0

To prepare the transition to “Industry 4.0” on the field level, SYS TEC electronic has developed a ready to use gateway solution for the Internet of Things. The basis for our IoT-Gateway is the ECUcore-1021 along with the dedicated Application Carrier Board in an IP20 aluminum housing. The ECUcore-1021, based on NXP (former Freescale) Layerscape LS1021A, is an embedded controller with a high density of available communication and I/O interfaces.

The System on Module offers outstanding performance at lower power dissipation and is particular designed for the secure communication in modern industrial applications. The Carrier Board is fitted with a broad number of commonly used high-speed interfaces like Gigabit Ethernet, USB3.0, SATA3.0, PCI-Express, LVDS, DVI and SD-Card. In addition it supports WLAN interface cards connected via MiniPCIe socked. This vast variety of on-board peripherals is an ideal base for implementation of own IoT-Gateway applications. The components of the device were selected on the basis of their long-term availability and reliable operation in industrial environments with a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Central module in distributed automation systems

The compact PLC - PLCmodule-C32 is an all-rounder for industrial control tasks. As Linux-based Compact PLC, the device is programmable in C/C++ and in IEC 61131-3. The IEC 61131-3 runtime kernel already includes a fully functional CANopen manager and function blocks for accessing on-board peripherals.

The compact PLC - PLCmodule-C32 supports simultaneous execution of IEC 61131-3 PLC programs and Linux applications. It is possible to share data between the PLC program written in IEC 61131-3 and other native Linux applications implemented in C/C++. A comprehensive IEC 61131-3 function block library provides access to all communication interfaces. Higher-layer protocols such as CANopen are available as well. The built-in CANopen manager services enable an easy integration of other CANopen modules and even allow distributing the application task to multiple networked devices. The communication and data exchange with other devices via Modbus protocol is supported by extended Modbus/TCP function blocks.

The PLCmodule-C32 is very well suited to act as a central module in distributed automation systems.
